Whales & Wildlife Report – May 12, 2013

What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than a cruise in the San Juan Islands? It may have been raining a bit in town, but the San Juans, being in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, were dry, and we even got a bit of sunshine in the afternoon. The highlight though was the wildlife! We started the day up near Sucia and Patos Islands, and eventually made our way towards the Canadian Gulf Islands. We spotted Stellar sea lions, Harbor porpoises, seals, Bald eagles and lots of different sea birds. Orcas were a bit elusive during our morning cruise. However, after our 2 hour shore visit in Friday Harbor we caught up with a group of 6 transient Orca whales, just north of town. It was definitely the highlight of what was already an amazing Mother’s Day.
