Whales & Wildlife Report – May 18, 2013

We were one of the first boats out in the islands yesterday, so without any early whale sightings from our spotting network, we decided to head north to the most likely place to find them. We cruised out between the San Juan and Canadian Gulf Islands, finding groups of Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises and seals, but no sign of Orca whales. After a bit of rain in the morning, the weather improved throughout the day and overall it was a beautiful day in the San Juan Islands. We dropped into Friday Harbor for our 2 hour shore visit, then made our way back to Bellingham. At that point we began to hear reports of Orca whales on the west side of San Juan Island. Unfortunately, it was too late for us to see them, so all of our passengers received 50% off passes for a future cruise with us.
